If you plan on being in downtown Sioux Falls near the Cherapa Place District this week, you'll likely see the Arc of Dreams lit up in a beautiful purple color.
If you're wondering, the city isn't counting down the days till the start of the Minnesota Vikings football season, instead, it has the Arc shining purple in honor of National Crime Victim's Rights Week.
National Crime Victims Week runs April 6 - 12th and is designed to confront and remove barriers to achieving justice for all victims of crime.
During this week, the nation is taking time to recognize the accomplishments of the victims’ rights movement and reflect on how far we have come. In addition to honoring the victim's rights movement throughout the week, the current needs of victims and their support groups will also be highlighted across the country.
Dakota News Now reports that National Crime Victims Week is sponsored by the Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime.
This year's theme is KINSHIP. A call to action to recognize that shared humanity should be at the center of supporting all survivors and victims of crime.
Here in South Dakota, all the various NCVW events during the week will be organized by Marsy's Law for South Dakota. A group responsible for advocating for crime victims’ rights and the passage of Amendment S, which added a Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights to the state constitution in November of 2016.
The Arc of Dreams is a massive stainless steel sculpture that spans an entire football field across the Big Sioux River downtown between 6th and 8th Street.
The Sioux Falls landmark will be lit up in a bright purple every evening through Saturday, (April 12).
